When you look back, it seems like the idea of building a Smart Home has been here for ages, but not much has been done about it. However, finally there is some progress in that field, as engineers are beginning to take full advantage of HomeKit Apps. The humble beginnings of HomeKit apps are found in devices such as the wireless remote for your garage door or the famous Clapper. Still, it seems like it’s moving along at a slow pace as the general public hasn’t been so keen to adopt these changes.
There are several devices that can be named “smart“. However, the problem has been incorporating all of them in one mutual system which will unify them in one place.
Apple HomeKit - the missing link?
Upon creating all of these smart devices, engineers have worked on a standard that will link them together. By creating a software that will connect the different hardware pieces, user will end up with one device that controls it all. That’s why the Apple IT experts came up with a program called MFi, which is short for “Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad“. This means that this program will be incorporated with every device compatible with Apple products. Analysts are pointing at a sheer magnitude of this project, predicting that by the end of 2015, almost 5 billion devices will be connected and in use. This isn’t the best part yet. It is estimated that by the year 2020, 25 billion devices will use this system. Impressive numbers for sure.
Best available HomeKit accessories
Even though the experts are predicting this program will blow up in the future, there are also some very cool devices for the time being. There are a couple of utensils on the market currently which share some common traits. We won’t point to any of them directly; instead, we will explain how they can make your life easier. Here are some of the best ones that are currently on the market:
Wireless Lights
With these special light switches, you will be able to control lighting in every room of the house right from your phone. With the built in thermostats you’ll also control the shades and brightness in each room separately. If you don’t think that this is something special, just remember how many times you fell asleep with the lights still on. With this app, you’ll be able to turn the lights off in any area of your home without leaving the comfort of your bed.
Your own meteorologist
This device will not only improve your quality of life by raising comfort levels, it will also maintain a healthy environment for you. With built in sensors, these mechanisms will measure the air quality in a certain room, monitor humidity and be on the lookout for any volatile organic compounds. Besides indoor, it will also collect info on the weather outside. All of these gathered information will be shown on the display of your Apple devices. It can be used with Siri.
Wi-Fi thermostat
Surely this is one of the best apps when it comes to energy saving. These modern thermostats monitor the temperature of the particular room at any time, allowing you to modify it from wherever you are. You can place as many of these thermostats around the house as you like, they will all show up in one app that is completely compatible with Siri.
Smart plug
Smart plug is a device that acts like a medium between you and all utensils compatible with HomeKit. By plugging in any device in the smart plug, you will be able to control it from your iPhone, whether it comes to lights, fans, or any other appliance. Besides from presenting a simple on/off switch, you can also use Siri to program it to fit your schedule in the best possible way.
Home Security
A lot of people are suspicious towards this, but it is a proven system, guaranteed to make your life easier. It will monitor whether your doors are locked, and it will point out to you if any of the windows are open when you decide to leave the house or go to bed. A lot of individuals aren’t happy to put their well being in the hands of one app, but they should consider it as another layer of security.
What we’ve learned?
Even though smart homes aren’t a standard just yet, they definitely present a future. Progress has been huge in the last few years, and Apple is trying to position itself as a leading company in this field. There is no denying that they have already made some impressive strides, as the technology is slowly catching up with the original plans. One thing is for sure, HomeKit apps are here to stay, and sooner you join in, your life will get more comfortable.
